1940 Census Online

The 1940 Census is not yet online nor is it available for research offline. There are a variety of so-called 'census substitutes' that have begun appearing both online and off. While city directories for the 1940s, voter registration records, and other primary sources may help your family research — we all know there is no true substitute for having the 1940 census online for our own inspection.

As soon as we learn of details for when and where the 1940 census will be available — online or off — we'll share details via magazines, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and just about any other media used by fellow genealogists.

1940 Census — Street Transcription Project
On Sunday, April 1, 2012, the 1940 Census is released from the 72-year privacy mandate and family historians will be ready to make their pilgrimage to the National Archives in search of their ancestors. As of yet, however, there is no 1940 census index available and so researchers will be required to know the Enumeration District for the city or town where their ancestors lived.
